Dear Friends,

The PFLAG/MCC Forum, during Pridefest Key West this year, was a great success! This was due to the willingness of those in attendance taking an interactive part during the forum. Our guest speakers, local community members, JT Thompson and Jane and David Evans all expressed their convictions and dedication to promoting diversity. During each of their presentations, they shared with us their very personal, profound and moving accounts of experiences which culminated in the belief that “All people are created equal members of ONE HUMAN FAMILY”. Jane and David Evans story, about the acceptance of their son Davy proclaiming he is gay, is truly a remarkable one. JT Thompson explained the intellect upon which he created the concept of the ONE HUMAN FAMILY ideal and the manner in which it has been embraced as the way of life in Key West.

Our world is diverse. In the face of this diversity, our lives can be further enriched by educating ourselves about the importance of acceptance. ..NOT just tolerance.

So, in order to provide the necessary resources to enable people to achieve acceptance of others, we must take it upon ourselves to do our part. Whether it is by offering your valuable time to volunteer a few hours each month  for events  or by becoming a member of a committee that organizes functions, workshops, and meetings throughout the Keys and/or by becoming a member of PFLAG Key West, GLCC Key West or the congregation of MCC Church, Key West. We are asking for your help. We want to make a difference in our local communities. We want to have our younger generation not only carry on these beliefs but to continue to build upon them. This will ensure that future generations of members of our community will base their beliefs and create their disposition, about acceptance of diversity, from an educated point of view. We will have enabled them to do their “homework” because of the resources we have made available to them and by the example we have set for them .Whether as  individuals, family’s, church’s , school groups, or organizations that promote outreach programs, please take some time to think about how best you can be of help to us. I encourage you to become a member of PFLAG Key West. Carole Benowitz, our State Coordinator for PFLAG National, is working on creating a new PFLAG South Florida Chapter. We have made record breaking success by assisting the Monroe County School District in establishing The Gay- Straight Alliance Organization at Key West High School last year. These types of endeavors can continue and will with your help. We all live each day in the face of diversity. This  is especially so concerning our youth today. Please refer to these websites to become familiar with what our causes are and how you can play a significant role in contributing to our causes. The websites are as follows:  www.keywestpflag.org; www.GLCCkeywest.org and www.MCCkeywest.com.

Please  visit the GLCC and MCC websites to find out how you can become a member/volunteer for them on-line.

In closing I sincerely wish, on behalf of PFLAG, GLCC and MCC of Key West, to thank each of you for your continued and unwavering support for these two organizations and The MCC Church. We are truly blessed to be a part of this community that is so giving and always willing to help.

We will look forward to seeing you in the near future.

May Peace and blessings be bestowed upon you,
